OK.. After about 8 months using Vista Ultimate(I got it on the Nov 30 "corporate customer" release date).. I just went the fuck back to XP on my main whore at home.
I was fucking sick and tired of everything being fucked initially when installed, or wouldn't install to begin with. I did not enjoy having to google almost every goddamn program I wanted to install for a workaround or tweak to get it working properly.
The drivers for everything were total fucking garbage, and I was updating at least one of them shits every two weeks, and for only minor improvements.
Copying and Deleting files was slow as shit, and forget about over the network... SLOW(to a Windows Server 2003 machine no less). Sometimes, you would delete something and it wouldn't go away until you rebooted. This is total and complete bullshit that a new OS can't even do file operations properly.
Periodically, everything would just freeze. Yes, freeze. For about a full 3 seconds and whatever was playing audio-wise would repeat like a scratched CD. Then it would resume like nothing happened. This is fucking progress...
Plus, the machine responded like my old computer from 4 years ago, but check this out, I have the following in this fucker:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ ~2.16Ghz Dual-Core
3, yes 3 Gigs of fucking RAM
7200 RPM Serial ATA 160 Gig Hard Drive with Native Command Queueing
Nvidia 7600GT PCI-Express
Intel, yes Intel motherboard, with the high-rated 965 chipset.
So the hardware was supposed to be kick ass, but did it? Vista sure as fuck didn't appreciate it.
I believe, as an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, that I had the most manicured, tweaked out Vista setup(proud?)... AND IT STILL SUCKED SHIT OUT A FAGGOT'S ASSHOLE!!!!
So XP it is. I have never seen a computer so so fucking fast and stable. I wasted that hardware I paid good money for, for motherfucking 8 months on that fucking piece of crap OS.
So piss all over that shit. Vista, I have confirmed, is the new "Windows ME". Sure XP sucked a bit when it first came out, but it had a purpose...TO FUCKING GET CONSUMERS OFF THE 9X KERNEL. This shit, takes the NT kernel, gives it diarrhea, then makes the consumer toss it's salad. Also, all of the added "features" that are not bullshit are either in XP, or are freely downloadable for XP FROM MICROSOFT'S WEBSITE. THERE ARE THINGS THAT MAY NEVER BE FIXED DUE TO DRM ETC. (THE FILE COPY/DELETE THING FOR EXAMPLE)
Its too bad that they are just fucking shoving it down all our throats. It isn't selling very well though, a fact they are trying to cover up. Maybe it actually will become like Windows ME, and they'll fucking just take it off the market soon, and we'll all end up replacing XP with "Windows 7", out in three years.

P.S. REGARDING LINUX:
I used another hard drive to try out Unbuntu 7.04. Pretty cool, if you don't fuck with shit. However, I wanted accelerated graphics, and I've got an enormous monitor with a high as shit resolution(2560x1600), and it was only giving me 1024x768 stretched. So, went to install nvidia drivers through their package manager and it killed the install. I was stuck in text mode. Couldn't even bring it up in a "VGA mode". This problem with X windows not coming up due to some fucked up entry in Xorg.conf is so old it can vote. Manually changing that file with vi to the "vesa" driver for some reason did not work.
When I get time, I will try the whole Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion thing to get my 3D desktop on. Then I can piss all over myself...

Slight chance I lot of shit may be fixed soon with the introduction of hotfixes 938979 and 938194. We'll see... it ain't a proper service pack, and 938979 has been available for some time if you called them. They gotta fucking do something, I mean goddamn.

Anyway, use "Envy". Just use it. It will detect, configure, download, and compile the latest driver for either your ATI or Nvidia card for you. It can also run in text mode. (This is good also for when you do an auto-update that updates the kernel. Steve Jobs should be pulling out some Iraqis-style torture on the motherfuckers that convinced him its OK without this. The Apple + AT&T's EDGE network makes the iPhone unexpectedly a mocha baby.
